2012 AmeriCorps CapacityCorps

Anaya Robinson – I’ve had a very extemporaneous life. I grew up in West Michigan, and expedited my undergraduate career to receive my BA in Sociology in 2 ½ years. I then ventured on to the Aveda Institute of Columbus, OH to acquire my cosmetology license. I intermixed my various educational experiences not only with college and trade school, but also with travel. My travel bug, thus far, has taken me to 49 states and 13 countries. After 5 years of being a hairstylist in the arts district of Columbus, the mountains began their beckoning call and my partner and I moved to Denver. I began to realize that, though I love doing hair, my passion really lies in service. After a month of being in Denver I began a 3 month AmeriCorps term of service with Mile High Youth Corps in their land conservation program. Through that program I became certified as a class “A” sawyer and spent my summer cutting fuel breaks and doing beetle kill mitigation in the mountains. That term only increased my desire to serve, so after finishing I scoured the AmeriCorps website for other possibilities. I am enormously excited to have the opportunity to serve with RTMD this year and cannot wait to be a part of the immense impact this organization has on the families and communities in the Denver Metro area.

George Davis – I have been committed to service my entire life from Youth group to Boy scouts. I attended college and majored in Economics, while splitting my academic time with service. I was in a group called Circle K which is the college level of Kiwanis Club. I also spent all of my spring breaks helping those in need from everything to Hurricane Ike relief to building trails in The Cumberland Gap. After graduating college I joined AmeriCorps NCCC to travel, serve others, and network.  After I completed AmeriCorps NCCC in November 2010, I wanted to move west to Colorado because I am an avid outdoorsman and love to participate in activities such as hunting, skiing, hiking, and camping. I found the Capacity Corps position and immediately thought it was the right fit.  In the future, I plan to attend graduate school for environmental and resource management, and get involved in the green building market.

Sarah Franklin – Originally from the Tennessee hills, the North Georgia Mountains, and somewhere in between, I formed strong ties with the Colorado Front Range, after venturing west to pursue my undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  It was here that I found my love for the great outdoors, the value of what it means to be part of a community, and my passion for sustainable and affordable housing.  After four years of strenuous classroom study, I felt it was high time to get my hands dirty!  I decided to commit to a more nomadic lifestyle of service in order to learn about the interworking  of non-profits, learn more about hands on construction, and to help revitalize communities in need. I explored alternative means of construction as a natural building intern, in Moab, Utah, building straw bale homes for local families. I then joined the rebuilding and historical preservation efforts to mitigate Katrina damage as a Project Development Associate with Rebuilding Together New Orleans. Currently, I am in my third year of service within the world of non-profit rebuilding, and I am thrilled to have found my way back to serving such a wonderful and unique community like Metro Denver!
